E545

Date:September 13, 2014
"So far, though I have not owned it long, it has been a very good purchase. Software wise, mine came with Windows 7 Professional installed, but with Windows 8 disks in the box, should I choose to change OS to the latest. Hardware, it has an excelent processor. At 4Gb RAM, it could stand an upgrade, but even out of the box it is sufficeint for my needs. My only gripe is that it came from the factory with none of the standard windows games, such as solitaire or spider solitaire to pass the time with, while other processes are run in the background, and all the function keys are set up with direct controls that are not what I would have chossen for myself. Still as a buisiness machine and a general purpose machine, it is definatley above average, and well above average for it's price."

Great work laptop for the price

Date:September 12, 2014
"At $400 from Amazon, this is a great machine for web/Word/Excel/e-mail/etc. It's by no means a gaming machine, but for a busy professional going to grad school on the side, it can't be beat. There is no laptop near this price that has the quality of keyboard you get on the Lenovo, and that is of much higher importance to me than gaming. Add in 3 USB3 ports, 1 USB2, an HDMI, plus the TrackPad, and you have a great work/school machine. For another $150, I swapped out the HDD for a 240gb SSD AND added another 4gb RAM (for a total of 8). Some comments have noted problems with the WiFi dropping. I have not had that issue at home, office, coffee shop, or campus. VERY satisfied!"

Works Pretty Well

Date:August 13, 2014
"I purchased the Lenovo ThinkPad E545 after extensive research. I was looking for a reasonably priced laptop with a matte screen for around $500. I was also curious to to try out an AMD APU based system. I have changed to the F1-12 keys to legacy mode in bios. Thanks for that option. I have also swapped the fn/ctrl keys in bios. Windows 8 is a mess and has been replaced with Ubuntu 14.04, which runs well, except that default kernel needs to be replaced with newer mainline one due to a well known bug in the driver for the wireless chipset, RTL8188EE. (Packet loss becomes horrible and WiFi unusable, without this update.)
Also, out of the box, the mouse pad is overly sensitive under both Windows and Linux, but adjustments on the software side have largely cleared up this issue. I like the TrackPoint a lot.
The keyboard is excellent. Overall, the system seems solidly built.
I am pleased with this purchase and hope to get many years of solid use from it."
