Customer Reviews for ThinkPad X1 Carbon
Review 1 for ThinkPad X1 Carbon
Great laptop ruined by keyboard and trackpad
Date:05 July 2014
"Been using thinkpads my working life. The changes to the keyboard layout are diabolical e.g. the delete button is where backspace used to be; The home button where capslock used to be etc. The function keys are replaced by an "e-ink" touch sensitive strip. As I type I brush against this strip and e.g. window explorer suddenly pops up. Sigh. Then on a trip away I get used to the keyboard, then I sit at my workstation and I'm hitting backspace instead of delete! Sigh. Trackpoint isn't great: To click requires depressing the entire trackpad panel - heavy and causes finger strain. Discrimination from left, middle, right is poor since you have to depress an entire panel. You can't swap the battery. So what do you do on a long flight when the battery runs out? No option to hibernate and swap battery. No native network port either - need an adapter cable I've already lost. No SD card port. It is well engineered, sold and reliable but wouldn't pay the extra if you are a thinkpad veteran."
"The original X1 was a fantastic laptop with a great keyboard, good performance and acceptable battery life. Whilst the chassis, screen and connectivity on the new model are even better it has been spoiled by a hopelessly over-complicated keyboard (a top row of physical buttons & a "Fn" key worked just fine) and horrible button-less trackpad which have made it virtually unusable. Thankfully, the old models are still available from distributors and give a much better user experience."
"The Good Keyboard (yes the layout takes a bit of getting used to) good feedback and travel. Adaptive function row nice and responsive Screen even colour and no backlight bleed Screen protector on as standard, yes it does mute the colours slightly Chassis build quality is excellent 3yr warranty as standard
The Bad Power button feels like it won't last, more travel on the left side of it than the right Annoying that I bought the one of the dearer models and no NFC, would have been handy as there is no SD card 1st 10 mins the trackpad and pointer stopped working (had to re-start) Took over six week to arrive, Digital River appalling at communicating
I bought the model Intel 5000 HD, touch, hi-res screen. The screen is very good nice sharp. Power supply is tiny so excellent for travelling. Overall I am quite impressed with the laptop. However the lack of NFC on this model and the so so power button have led me to return it. It's just not quite worth the price paid."
"When I received the X1 the screen broke within 12 hours. No replacement touch screen was available and I was without a laptop for 2 weeks. However, no problems since.
The touch screen has a protective layer which makes the font look blurry and strains your eyes. After 4 weeks of using it, I followed the advice from the forum and removed the protective layer (note: this is NOT recommended by Lenovo and may void the warranty). The screen looked much better - crystal clear and very sharp.
The buttons are arranged differently and took some time to get used to. The adaptive keys are unusable. They are slow to change from one set of keys to the next and it's difficult to know if you hit the correct button as there is no tactile feedback."
What has happened to the trackpad - it's now clunky, noisy and frustratingly inaccurate - what was once a almost seamless extension of my hand has now rendered me one grade worse than my gran as I struggle to muster strength and dexterity to depress the whole trackpad "button" correctly and wince at the noise the return action is about to make!
So all in all such a disappointment for a £2k machine that should have been amazing!
And shocked that this same trackpad is also on all thinkpads now!!
It's on it's way back and after 10+ Thinkpads I am off in search of a new laptop brand until something is done about the iconic trackpad!"
"Given how good the first X1 carbon was this is a really poor update. The keyboard is unusable - no caps lock, delete and backspace in the wrong places The adaptivekey simpy don't work - you can't see them and the icons are incomprehensibel
