"IBM used to make the 14" its priority, Lenovo doesn't seem to do that anymore.
Cons The T420, although a nice machine has some real drawbacks: 1) the optical drive is poorly placed, excessively large (12.7mm as opposed to 9.5mm on all other machines) and the button mechanism is extremely sensitive. Pick up your computer the wrong way and the optical drive tray shoots open. There are no means of "locking" the optical bay from opening by mistake. Lenovo no longer offers ultrabay batteries for T420, no more HDD caddys for the T420. 2) Screen quality. Not existent. Enough said. Extremely poor. T420s, T420 models have absolutely awful displays. T520 & X series screens with hugely better contrast and brightness, why not the T420(s)? 3) Engineering: Fan issues on these machines is prevalent and persistent - T420s and T420 fan will suddenly increase to high setting until machine is rebooted. No fix for this - going on 10 months from release. 4) Screen size v resolution. 16:9 does not belong on a business laptop - full stop. At resolutions of 1600x900 or higher, this isn't much of a problem, but incomprehensible at lower resolutions. Has Lenovo forgotten that the "ThinkPad" series of systems are intended for business and not watching movies!? 5) Trackpad - wonder why these are still included on the machines if they're rendered all but useless.
Pros: 1) Great selection of CPUs - machines are fast, customizable and certainly don't lack in performance if properly configured. 2) Keyboard - enough said.
Lenovo, please price the ThinkPads out of consumer reach, but bring back the expected top-notch reliable quality and well-engineered products.
Go ahead make consumer-grade laptops with all the fun stuff like triple-wide screens and HDMI output and non-functioning this or that, but don't mix and match the two.
